ELDER SCROLL FANS ALIENATED BY MMO GAMEPLAY
Upon the release of The elder scrolls online, many diehard bethesdian fans of the solo rpg play style of Morrowind, Oblivion, and Skyrim felt a little out of place. For many fans of the franchise, The Elder Scrolls series has always been about one player’s influence over a massive sandboxed world. Elder Scroll fans are used to being destined for greatness and outshining all the npcs in a vast and colorful world full of enticing plot lines, dangerous monsters, hidden dungeons, and secrets of power. Old players of the franchise were a bit underwhelmed with the idea of sharing such a world with other players. Matt Firor of Zenimax Online Studios stated "Subscription resonated with one half of the audience but not the other half. RPG players, Skyrim players, were just not used to that."
Luckily, Bethesda decided early to allow the release of The Elder Scrolls Online to be played through the PS4 and Xbox One platforms, allowing most gamers to continue their past experience of enjoying gameplay without a computer console. Matt Firor continued by assuring gamers that they could play the same way they did in the past and unlike most MMOs, The Elder Scrolls Online is not free to play, leaving the field open for true Elder Scroll fans. “It's been well received, and mostly because we didn't go free-to-play. You could still play the game right out of the box and not have to spend any extra money. That really resonates with Elder Scrolls players.”
